Project Title
A Campaign on Prevention of Violence against Women in Dehradun District of Uttaranchal
Objectives
- To change practices and beliefs within the family those discriminate against girls and women and perpetuate violence on them in various forms to more gender equitable practices
- To increase the number of women raising their voices against violence within the family as well as in the social sphere
- To increase the number of women and men in the society who publicly condemn violence on women as a violation of women’s human rights and support women who raise their voice
- To change practices of Police, Judiciary, Women and child welfare and health departments in favour of justice and equality for women
- To intervene collectively along with other like minded groups to influence State’s policies in favour of women
Activities
- Collection of baseline information to determine the extent of violence and discrimination against women
- Development and sourcing of resource material like audio and video cassettes, literature, leaflets, pamphlets, posters, books, etc
- Holding of yatras and melas with focus on mobilising men and women with special attention on Muslim women and men
- Outreach among students to bring out the existing gender discrimination and various forms of violence against women within the family as well as in the social spaces
- Legal literacy camps for the identified women and men to develop understanding about the law in favour of women
- Alliance building with like-minded voluntary organisations working on this issue and collective celebration of events like International
Women’s Day and International Human Rights Day
- Sensitisation workshops to change the practices of personnel of various state departments like the police, judiciary, women and child welfare, development and health departments
- Involvement of media through seminar and fellowship grant to journalists
Expected Outcomes
- More number of women will become aware of violence and discrimination perpetrated on them in the name of culture, tradition, religion, values, etc., and will raise their voice to demand justice
- More number of women and men in the society will recognise various forms of violence and discrimination on women within the family and in social spaces and will change practices and beliefs that perpetrate these Women who will publicly raise their voice for justice shall receive support from community at the local level
- Personnel in various departments will take speedy and positive action in favour of women who approach them for justice and rights
- Personnel in various departments shall implement the laws and schemes in favour of women according to the philosophy and spirit
- Larger number of women approaching police, judiciary, health, mother and child department will receive sensitive support from the personnel and their cases will be registered
