The Morchas

In its quest for solution to the problems being faced by the people the organisation has promoted two community-based organisations (CBOs) – Ghad Kshettra Mazdoor Morcha and Mahila Mazdoor Evam Laghu Kisan Morcha. These CBOs have been in fore front of all the people's struggles and received support from the organisation. Initially the CBOs were dependent on the organisation for all their activities to the extent that there was a very thin dividing line between the organisation and the CBOs. This approach was, however, causing numeroud problems.

For the past few years efforts are underway to make the CBOs independent of the organisation as far as activities and finances are concerned, while maintaining working relations with the organisation. Some of the efforts in this direction are:

  1. Membership fee. Each member of the two CBOs has to pay a modest membership fee of Rs 2 per annum. About Rs 15,000 are collected this way.
  2. Collection of wheat from the villages during rabi harvesting season. The wheat thus collected is sold in the open market. Though the quantity of wheat thus collected varies from year to year, on an average Rs 20,000 are collected through this.
  3. Cash collection from the members of the community. Roughly Rs 5,000 are collected this way.

The money thus collected, however, is too short of the activities being performed by the CBOs. To meet this shortage, the organisation contributes some amount every year so the activities of the CBOs may go on uninterrupted.

In addition, the organisation supports the CBOs logistically, technically and otherwise. It organises capacity building training for activists of the CBOs. Every month on 24th day review meetings of the CBOs are held at the Training Centre. About three years back working of the CBOs has been decentralised through creation of four ‘Morcha Centres’.
