Dimensions of Violence against Women
World over one out of three women is a victim of violence or murder. In Asia, every second woman is a victim of violence in her home. According to the National Crime Record Bureau established under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, the following are dimensions of violence against women:
- Every 12th minute one woman becomes victim of atrocities of her husband or her in-laws
- Every 78th minute there is a dowry death
- Every 60th minute there is an incident of sexual violence or teasing
- Every 34th minute a woman becomes victim of rape
- Every 33rd minute a woman or a girl child is kidnapped
According to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, over 400 lakh women are missing in our country because of murder, rape, atrocities and murder in womb.
It is the women who bear the brunt of violence, which is perpetrated on them simply because they are women.
